Where the E-cars
Gas-powered vehicles: They've proven to finally?? be bad for the overall economy, they're terrible for the environment (go into some more confined space and tell me what you think), and they almost certainly play a part in so many of us being obese or in less than optimal health. Tell me how that adds up?

The Fact
That it takes time to read some of what I'm saying (not that it amounts to much!) - time which we feel we might not have - this is most reflective of the message.

Math vol. 2
All too often we as humans opt for none, even when we know that just a little is better than none. Not going to name them all of course but think about it. Six minutes of stretching per day, 10 raisins in our bodies, listening to one song we enjoy amidst what might be a strenuous day or period, 1 bike ride to work during a month, etc etc. This is more of the real crisis. Our relationship with time and what we "can" accomplish rather than what we "can't" has become dynamically skewed.
Many of us struggle with the conceptualization of taking just a bite if we can't have the immediate meal. The wonderful thing is that it isn't our fundamental fault, but the shame and blame and constant messages about how we misuse our time only tends to bury us deeper under more strains of soil.
While basic K-1 math, the number of us who choose not to carry out this most fundamental equation in our daily lives is high. Quite honestly, it shouldn't be. More importantly, it doesn't have to be. This little thing that takes one day to teach might be the best legacy of any education system perceived to be flawed. Consider that for a minute.
Not even going to play the Kweli "Distractions" joint here.

Pay attention to where you are/what you are doing when having your best or most redeeming ideas. This is very important
Solution
Turning off your tv and instead going for a 30 minute walk would be better for you, me, and humanity - but we know for most of us that ain't happening. The origins of change aren't necessarily what we have been taught to believe. Which only further points to the fact that we need each other possibly more now than in any other time in history. Silence, segregation and separation might be what out to be criminal :)
Don't fool yourself
I would easily bet $100 that none of us will hear anything about what I just wrote in a WORLDWIDE televised "debate" tonight. Or any gathering of suits and money the rest of this year. And if we do, it won't be from one or two or three of the people being called "frontrunners." This is certainly part of the fundamental problem. You can't build a basketball team on people who only shoot 3's and half-court shots, and that is what some of this poor problem-solving has become. We all know money is at the root of the 100 or so debates this year. Weren't there like 3 or 4 at one point spaced out every other month? While I could be critical of Fox and NBC and others for clawing for and hyping these part-business opportunities to the max amount, we as people are the power to tune in or tune out. And unfortunately, we care about (or have been taught) the bullshit more than the truth in most instances. It's primarily a game that people who really have no more power than any of the rest of us are playing right above our very own heads. But it isn't that far over our heads as we think, and that is the pretty thing in my opinion.
I put worldwide in caps because it you lived in Istanbul or Zurich or St. Petersburg and caught some of this "action" (or Civil War as I've heard it - odd?), what might your perception be of the US and A? That's what I thought.

Where does it stop
When does the time come when we say No and then in fact move in another direction? This is an important existential quandary for all of us. Be it relationships, work, etc. we all have the No voice in our minds and the norm is to hear it more often than that lovely Y word. We're conditioned after all and it certainly is nobody's fault. But, just because it is the norm does not mean it has to be the way. The way can definitely our own way - call it a different way - and this is one of the most important challenges facing our society in the next decade or two.
There needs to be a fundamental change in how we as individuals treat/value/dignify ourselves and our desires in this lifetime. This creates the outward ripple which we all get to feel and enjoy once it more commonly occurs. Call it the reverberation. It is indeed melodic, and it is just waiting to happen. And it is waiting to happen every day. Be it a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, these days are only different in the way you and I have been taught to see and work!! within them. In a universal manner, they are only separated by the manner they are spelled. It is pretty simple. We can try to manipulate the truth as much as we care to and we will go on doing so as we love to make this complicated as humans, but this is not quite something arguable. Freedom comes when there is first acceptance. The push/pull/fight and constant grind that can materialize from our viewpoint is actually what is predominantly crushing. And when I am talking about being crushing, I pretty much mean one's spirit our soul becoming smaller as opposed to being expansive, which is the intended way as far as I've learned.
The Beatles had an album called Rubber Souls after all, and people liked them quite a lot.

How much are we using our own talents in our daily work, relationships, leisure time? etc. Even if in disguise, these likely haven't gone anywhere and may just be waiting for an impromptu release into the world. Truly owning one's talent is not always an easy thing but seems to be essential for us all.

Sadly, in the past 30 years, 25-40 percent of all corals worldwide and 92 percent of the branching corals indigenous to Florida and the American Caribbean have perished due to climate change, pollution, ocean acidification, and disease.2 With such disturbingly low numbers remaining, recovery without help from humans is extremely unlikely and probably would not occur in our lifetime.

If you're someone who tends to meddle in the lives of others, how come that is? What might that be saying about one's own happiness/actualization/prosperity in the world? Maybe it's simply a genetic or natural disposition, but I don't often think so.
We see this behavior of turning "inward" or self-recognition (and confrontation) somewhat hyper-marketed now and that may be part of what makes this confounding for some. Simply put, it is courage in most basic form. I guess we too can be heroes when we answer yes! to a question similar to this. This is the actual starting point of change.

I'm not quite sure, but how many of us are continually smoking cigarettes because of addiction or simply because it serves as a distraction or provides "something to do." This seems to point towards a deeper, more concentrated problem. And a tougher thing is that an industry can thrive on this existential confusion. In other words, it's likely no smoker's real fault. With this said, it would be constructive and probably productive for smokers themselves to challenge one another more on this exact topic. Maybe over a smoke? :)

Sum truth
The world being an imperfect place is not meant as an excuse to not try in some way to make it perfect. Frankly, it never will be.
Sustainability
There's some probability I'm projecting, but how many of us believe (and more importantly choose to live by) the adage that all things are possible under the sun? It seems to me that a majority of us don't share this belief and it reveals a more fundamental & connected problem. As I've thought often during formal/informal education times, the Root is where the majority of the focus should lie. This is improving, but nowhere close to what I might call an essential level. As in food, the product is mostly garbage and undesirable without some continually healthy soil :)

Just a thought
What if we didn't get the "news" every day? What if perhaps the news was delivered or reported upon every other day? Maybe even every third day? What would be the effect of such a change? Maybe some more in depth, focused journalism. Possibly an opportunity to report upon a story or two that may get omitted due to a probable degree of pressure to get stories "out" on the 24 hour basis that we at some point grew accustomed to. This is perhaps an example of such a change that would result in greater overall human health. And it might not shatter a system of 24 hour news that has become embedded in a fabric of social being. But we don't get too crazy about change when we get cozy in our norms and expecting tendencies - nor when it involves a different flow of the mighty dollar.

Curious
Does anyone else wonder where all the animals go when it becomes 10, 20, 30 below? I bet they're not alone.
Real winners
I had a couple of crisp 20's in my hand the other day and something felt off. I think the sentiment primarily came from the fact that what I was holding wasn't exactly real. When we understand that there is a growing deficit of some trillion dollars and government money for most public projects (in MN, WI, and IL just as example) is only borrowed, don't we in some ways lessen our reliance and drive towards something that is in fact non-existent? Not exactly, and that continues to be the issue.
This is the paradox of Powerball too. Money, in most cases doesn't exactly equate to happiness but the focus on it tends to cause a drift from happiness. I haven't checked, but stories from past large jackpot "winners" would likely confirm this fact. For some reason, I didn't see any stories about that anywhere the past week.

On planning
Planning ahead is probably okay, but it's when we plan or project too much into the future that we can miss certain (fun!) opportunities in the present or short-term.
Fabric of being
Here's another truth: If we complimented others more, we would be far better at complimenting our very own selves. The ratio of folks who act on or are even aware of this truth to those who don't is part of what drives sickness here and abroad. As I may have stated before, silence is deadly - and killing more people than any other highly-reported causality.
We depend on a highly-flawed system (and then we complain) mostly because we are so very poor at doing simple things that could keep one another from relying on it in the first place.
Go The Distance? :)

General rule
Even if you don't tell anybody (it's better if you do), if you feel like wanting to change your life 5 out 7 days of the week - you probably want to change your life. The cool thing is that the change we may picture to be enormous often doesn't need be something major. Guess what, it might just be as simple and alleviating as saying what we've been hearing go round and round in our brains repeatedly day after day :)
This is the truth, and partly the fallacy of time as the time excuse doesn't and will never work. Better to do something in the near term than sit by for what could be a lifetime only to hear this same voice greeting you again when there actually is a small window of time for action. This happens, sadly and potentially more times than not.

Mistress America
A decent movie, but a great and true last line: "Being a beacon of hope is a lonely business."
Being reflective
Something to consider: Any boater, walker, vacationer is familiar with the term invasive species. These are organisms introduced to a water body that essentially are harmful to that ecosystem.
My guess is that 1% or less of us who read such language (and care to regard or not) possess the consciousness or desire to think that we, ourselves might behave in a manner that's equally or even more invasive to this small ecosystem we call Earth. Perhaps it might even be the gas-guzzling, carbon-emitting SUV or 150 we trolled to water in :)
Here's an invasive definition - An invasive species is a plant, fungus, or animal species that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species), and which has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health.
We were at one point "introduced," right? winkwink

Remember that Bette Midler song? A classic, and an also terrible, terrible formula for dealing with what we love to call "Poverty." Poverty is a human problem and no longer is it simply a term for a small segment who are somewhat disadvantaged, but it's a true lifestyle for more who grace this Earth than who don't.

Precious seconds
America: we might be good at a few things but we suck at taking time.
Even when we know it's right - we feel it in our bones - to take the 5, 10 seconds to do what it most important, we almost routinely choose to act otherwise.
Since we are hyper-influencing one another, these choices to not take only what would amount to a minute or two in a day of chaos, these are the decisions that spread in a manner not dissimilar from a cancer.

Here's the think about inclusiveness or inclusivity: It's the only, only, only way of the future.
I wrote the thing about failure the other day, but I'm thinking that failure is in some ways real. So very many are failing every single day, time and time and time again. And the truth of the matter is that these are the ones who are in leadership positions that on the whole are failing the planet.
When we frame it as failing the planet, our odds as individual citizens of seeing - and more importantly doing - something about the truth go way up. We all operate under what's called the bystander effect when we tune into what the lies are ultimately telling us - that we as individuals are more important than we actually are. When we shift OUR focus onto what matters and what is much much closer than reading a paper or checking our online subscriptions from home would allow us to be conscious of - we are all much closer in geography and heart than we go on feeling and believing most every day.
As I said to someone recently: Your 150,00 dollar dream home means you-know-what when you're standing in waist high water in the middle of the kitchen (and this isn't even on the coast!). Odds are, your neighbor got nearly washed away by the same damn thing.

Odds are, your neighbor got nearly washed away by the same damn thing.

little things
Asking someone How young are you? instead of How old are you? can have a huge, huge impact on collective psyche. And if 4 words take courage - we have a long way to go :)

No Limits
I definitely have my beliefs, but isn't failure simply a myth? Why or why not?
Here's something to ponder. If a man or woman tries to climb Mt. Everest, Rainer, whatever - and he/she reaches the peak on the 10th try - what do we call the 5th or 6th attempts?
Probably depends on who you ask, but think the word starts with the letter "L"

Race and Fear
Two words. Only 1 letter different. They're the same thing.
"Hyping" race only leads to fear. And we know what fear leads to (Read the news).
Truth is coming: There is only one race.
2nd Truth: There will always be one race.
Suggestion: Next time you hear something spewed about race/race influence/etc - shift your attention. Immediately.
One more thing: This momentary shift is the place where change begins.

The Fallacy
Humans: If we can't take the whole bite, most of us don't bite at all. Thing is, it's mostly a product of how we're taught but the blame-and-shame only compounds the whole damn thing. Maybe observe some animals more? They don't do that, and mostly they are much better, happier, and healthier for it.
The spiral can and will as far as I know always go inwards and outwards.

Health Care
If shoveling snow for 10 makes you winded or tired, it's vital to schedule 30 mins. of cardio for one of the next 2-3 days. Asking for help just may be the ticket too.

Real scales
Having somewhat of decent work-ethic seems like it should be a main qualifier for getting into a relationship in the first place.

Regardless of your horoscope or "sign," just another indication why I'm somewhat fearful we might be looking at a collective year of the dinosaur in the not-so-far-future. **

**This behavior was partly during/immediately following the most publicized climate discussion in world history.
**Our cities aren't burning, but they are certainly becoming more toxified by their very own citizens (there's not a difference).
**Separating want from need from what's best for us all will be the story of our time. Without a doubt.
Last, here's a fact. 1.4 million people die prematurely in China on an annual basis due to problems with air quality. Pollution levels are far beyond what most would consider humane.
Here's another fact. We are not much different from China or Chinese folks. Actually, hardly at all. Especially when we consider all of the manufacturing/business we as a country have displaced across the Pacific Ocean, are we not as or maybe more responsible for these (ONLY GROWING) number of early deaths? This air we see that isn't even breathable is saturated with money and greed. I guess this is what I'm saying.
Most important takeway: this air is not just staying abroad - it's closer and quite possibly getting closer than most choose to know. Call it the "Ifitdon'taffectmenowwhyshouldIworrysyndrome" we continue to suffer from probably more than anything else :)

Some truth
The true beauty of being a human being is not much unlike a plant or flower. It resides in the fact that anything - yes anything - has the potential to make one stronger.
On gratitude
If we're being grateful throughout the day, those pre-meal prayers become a little less significant.
Not a violent person
But if anyone complains about a small stretch of cold in January or Feb, I might punch their face.
Love II
Love is that thing that keeps standing up
and keeps standing up
and keeps standing up
and then it stands up.
Let's tell the kids.

Equations
For those who like mathematics:
more time looking at the sky & sun
plus
less time glaring at phone/"news"/ hyper-publication of terror and ills
equals
At least a perception of a healthier, happier, more inhabitable world.

In addition to sky
This is what I saw on my drive to Minneapolis yesterday:
Some chance I was imagining, but felt I saw a tiny hue of pollution surrounding on of the "cleanest" metro areas in the land as well.

Since
the majority of us (hey men) struggle with the I-word, you better ask somebody - youreallybetterasksomebody.
Regardless
Honesty and Intimacy.
If I was a human (good thing I am!), I'd be searching for more of these two things not only in a new year, but every. single. day.

Guess the Clintons are still around.

Remembering
I don't necessarily need a study or any data to know that on the whole, people resolving to do one thing in the new year have greater success or higher satisfaction potential than those who strive to do 3 things.
